Summary

Volunteer with Ecologia in Kenya

Ecologia Youth Trust has over 20 years of experience of placing volunteers of all ages in inspiring and meaningful placements overseas. Together with our local Kenyan partner, we are excited to offer a new programme perfect for energetic, self-motivated volunteers.

International Peace Initiatives (IPI), works from the grassroots up to build community capacity to effectively respond to the challenges of disease, poverty, climate change, stigma, discrimination and violence, through skills-training workshops, community-led campaigns and advocacy. Before you depart, we take the time to get to know about your individual skills, talents and hopes for your time overseas. We then work closely with our colleagues in Kenya to ensure that the tasks you are asked to do are genuinely useful, and tailored to your own educational, professional, and personal goals. Whether you want to focus on women's and youth empowerment through skills training and leadership programmes; enrich the lives and education of children affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty; work on IPI's organic farm and study its permaculture model, or simply help out as and where you are needed, this is is your chance to be part of an exciting, innovative programme while gaining practical experience of cutting-edge development work from an expert in the field.

What will I do?

The work you do will be varied and tailored to your interests. It could involve one or more of the following:

- Living, working, playing with the children at KACH to enrich their lives; helping in the kitchen or even organising some after-school clubs and weekend activities for the children.
- Assisting with women’s skills-training workshops, empowering them to support themselves and their families.
- Working on Tiriji’s organic farm studying permaculture, sustainable agriculture and renewable energy solutions; planting trees; helping to construct eco-buildings.
- Assisting with lessons at local schools; promoting nonviolence and peace building in those schools and their communities; teaching English.
- Working with a women’s cooperative; developing small business enterprises with women and youth.
- Supporting women’s and children’s human rights advocacy efforts; promoting reproductive health care for women and girls…

...and much more!

Who can volunteer?

All nationalities are welcome and we accept volunteers of all ages, as long as you are 18 or over. Our programme is open to anyone who feels they have something to contribute: useful skills include being able to teach music, IT, arts & crafts, ESL, and sport.

How can I fund my placement?

IPI welcomes volunteers from all cultures and backgrounds because of the many benefits they bring. Likewise, volunteers consistently tell us the experience has been invaluable, even life-changing, because of the rich opportunities it affords to gain new perspectives and develop interpersonal and work-related skills. These opportunities begin from the moment you are accepted onto our programme. To help IPI be sustainable, we ask each volunteer to fundraise for a minimum amount of money before departure. You will receive our Fundraising Pack, full of tips and advice, and comprehensive support from our Volunteers Coordinator in Scotland to inspire your friends and family to give generously and help you reach – or even smash – your target!

The more you raise, the more you can support the children at KACH to receive things we often take for granted: a loving home, a good education, food, clothing, even simple toys. In return, fundraising will boost your confidence and allow you to hone organisation and presentation skills that will be useful in your professional careers and personal life long after you return home.

As well as helping IPI to fund its vital work, your fundraising covers the cost of your food and accommodation, a return airport transfer from Nairobi, pre-departure and on-return support from Ecologia, and on-site support from IPI’s staff. It does not include the cost of your airfare, travel insurance, inoculations, visa, or personal spending money should you wish to do some sight-seeing or take a safari.
