Duration: from 2 weeks to 4 weeks
Countries: Costa Rica
Volunteer on this amazing conservation project set deep in the heart of the Costa Rican rainforest, and you will have the chance to aid in the conservation of sloths and other local wildlife.

Sloth Conservation And Wildlife Experience

This project is based deep in the Costa Rican rainforest and it has an amazing backstory. The project was founded way back in 1999 by two young girls who had a passion for saving the rainforest, and with the parental help they began to sell crafts at the side of the road to raise money to save the forest. Eventually, their hard work paid off and the shop began to expand and develop. Since then the project has grown into the impressive sanctuary it is today and it now helps over 200 local, in need animals including the world famous sloth and many others such as birds, monkeys and adorable anteaters!

The project centre is surrounded by many acres of verdant rainforest, and by volunteering here you will have the chance to become fully immersed in the incredible biodiversity that Costa Rica has to offer. You will play a crucial role in helping to protect not only the sloths that reside at the centre, but also the many other animal resident at the centre. Your assistance with activities such as maintenance, food preparation, monitoring and construction will be crucial in helping the centre to run smoothly and to make sure that the regions wildlife has a safe haven for years to come.

Day 1

Arrive at the project site from the airport (transfer fee not included) and you will have time to settle in and meet all of the other volunteers. You will be shown around all of the facilities including the laundry room, pool and kitchen.

Day 2-14

Project days - Volunteers will be working from 8.30am until around 5.50pm. The latter part of the day may be spent walking the animals, but please note all activities can change very quickly due to the nature of the project!

Day 15

After a farewell party you will need to make your way from the project site back to the airport.

Project Activities

On this project you will get the chance to take part in a wide variety of exciting activities. Below are examples of some of those included in this project.

Enclosure Cleaning

You will help to clean the enclosures of the animals to ensure that all of the animals resident have a hygienic environment in which to live.

You will also help to stimulate the animals by encouraging natural behaviours through enrichment.

Food Preparation and Distributing

You will spend time collecting and preparing food and water for the animals at the sanctuary and then give it out to them.

Behavioural Observation

As a volunteer you will help to observe the animals behaviours to ensure that they remain healthy.

At this project trees are planted to provide food, shelter, and a safe corridor for the local animals to use. You will be working in teams of three to plant the trees which will provide a safe haven for the local wildlife.

Educational Research & Reports

A big part of this project is working to teach others about the importance of conservation and you will play a big part in this. You will have the chance to gather information on a topic you are passionate about and then share it with tourists and visitors to a local Inn in an attempt to help spread awareness.
