Summary

Mozambique & Zimbabwe Explorer

Day 1 – 3 - Johannesburg – Komatipoort - Tofo, Inhambane
From Johannesburg - South Africa’s commercial capital - we travel to the far east of the country to the town of Komatipoort for our first night on tour before crossing the border to Mozambique and to the picturesque beaches of Tofo, Inhambane where we enjoy 2 nights exploring the area. Tofo is a small coastal town with open beaches and where the pace of life is slow allowing you to relax and soak it all up. Optional activities such as horse riding, snorkelling and scuba are normally available. The natural vegetation of the coastal plain is dune forest but at Tofo, this has largely been replaced by coconut palms, planted by the Portuguese and local Bitonga people to supply the thriving copra trade. There are some exciting bars and restaurants in the area where you can relax, sample some of the local cuisines and cocktails.

Day 4 – 6 - Tofo, Inhambane - Vilanculos - Xai Xai
Leaving Inhambane we take the coastal route arriving at Vilankulo (or Vilanculos), some 500km south of Beira and the Gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago. It's here we take a Dhow (traditional sailing boat) to Magaruque Island, the third Island in the archipelago to enjoy the island at leisure. A delicious seafood lunch will be served under the shady palm fringes. Basic snorkelling equipment and the park fees are included, allowing you to enjoy your day in full.  With its white sandy beaches, coconut fringed palms, crystal turquoise waters, and superb all-year round temperate climate this place is perfect for relaxing and rejuvenating.  it's then off to Xai Xai for our last night on the coast of Mozambique.

Day 7 – 9 - Xai Xai - Hazyview - Tshipise, South Africa
Crossing back to South Africa, we make our way to the Greater Kruger area. This evening we immerse ourselves in the local culture and enjoy Shangaan tribal dancing and singing around an open fire. It is an opportunity to learn something of the way of life of these fascinating local people. The following day we board open 4x4 safari vehicles and prepare for our full day game drive in search of the 'Big 5' - elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. After a wonderful 2 night stay, we make our way to Tshipise in the Northern Province where we can soak in the camps hot spring pools.

Day 10 – 11 - Tshipise, South Africa - Bulawayo - Matobo National Park, Zimbabwe
Today, we make our way across the border to Zimbabwe and on to Bulawayo, a pleasant city with broad tree lined avenues and wide open spaces. We spend the next 2 nights here and explore the Matobo National Park on a half day guided tour. The wind-sculptured Matobo Hills are the site of numerous Bushman paintings and the area holds a special cultural and spiritual importance to the indigenous people. The reserve also has a large concentration of the Black and White Rhino and providing it’s safe to do so our guides will lead us on foot to search for these magnificent animals.

Day 12 – 14 - Matobo National Park - Hwange National Park - Victoria Falls
This morning we visit the Khami Ruins, an important archaeological site and former trading centre, dating from the 16th century before continuing to the world renowned Hwange National Park. This magnificent park contains over 100 mammal species including Africa’s “Big 5” (leopard, lion, elephant, rhino and buffalo) and abundant bird species which we search for on an open 4x4 game driving vehicle. After a refreshing night's sleep, we make our way to the Victoria Falls town and enjoy the view over the falls themselves. It's here you have the opportunity to enjoy the many optional activities such as white water rafting, flights over the falls, cruises on the Zambezi and cultural visits. The tour ends after breakfast on day 14.
