Amakhala Volunteer Project

from £744
Duration: from 15 days to 55 days
Countries: South Africa
Volunteer in incredible South Africa on this ’Big 5’ game reserve and help to protect and reintroduce an abundance of fascinating wildlife into the area they once called home.
Summary

Amakhala Volunteer Project

Founded in 1999, this exciting project covers 7.500 hectares of trailing savannah and bushveld exploding with a vast array of wildlife including Africa’s iconic ‘Big 5’ (elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, and rhino) who roam around the region. During your time on the reserve you stand a chance of spotting these phenomenal creatures along with leaping antelopes, rapid cheetahs and much more, so be sure to keep your camera at the ready where you can!

As an Amakhala volunteer, you will play a vital role in not only protecting the environment directly by getting involved with tasks like reserve and land management, but also with exciting hands on activities like animal capture and care, and predator monitoring. Here you learn that not all volunteer accommodation is as rustic as you think and you even get to enjoy a delicious meal in a luxury lodge for one night during your stay!

Some Of The Possible Activities You Could Be Involved With On The Project:

  • Game Drives - assisting with animal monitoring
  • Reserve Maintenance - ensuring the reserve operates smoothly
  • Game Capture - capturing animals if the vet needs to check their condition and relocating them where necessary
  • Canoeing And Boating On The Local River - allowing a breathtaking look at the reserve's wildlife from a different perspective
  • Visiting The Local Community Centre - spending time with the local children, talking and dancing with them!
  • Alien Plant Control - keeping control of plant life that is damaging to the endemic species in the area which the animals on the reserve rely on

Itinerary: Please note itineraries are subject to change so what follows is just a rough guideline.

Day 1 - The Adventure Begins:

You will arrive at the project site from the airport and given time to settle into the volunteer accommodation, in addition to taking a tour of the facilities. Volunteers cook for themselves, so this will be a fantastic opportunity for you all to bond as you share dinner duties on your first night at the project!

Day 2 - 14 - Project Days:
Project days begin around 7am with volunteers enjoying a hearty breakfast of toast, cereal or maybe even an omelette alongside a big cup of coffee for some early morning energy for your busy day ahead! At around 7.30 you will head out for the first activity of the day, but you will need to be prepared for anything as life on an active game reserve means what is required of volunteers can change at the drop of a hat! You could be heading out to spend the morning canoeing on the nearby river or to check on the lions on a game drive, but the excitement lies in that you won’t know for sure until you arrive at the project! After a morning of working hard, you will break for lunch around 1pm. After satisfying your appetite either at the volunteer house or out in the field, you’ll head back out to complete the afternoon activity which could possibly entail visiting the community centre or helping to fix a fence before coming back to relax for the remainder of the day at 4pm. After a jam-packed week,  you’ll be pleased to hear that weekends are spent at your leisure where you can relax or venture out and about to explore!

Day 15 - Return Home :
Sadly, today is your last day on the project! After saying your fond farewells to project facilitators and your fellow volunteers, you will make your way back to the airport to begin your journey home or commence your onward and independent travel plans. Wherever you may be going, you can be sure to be leaving the project with a lifetime of unforgettable memories in tow!
