Summary

Rhino and Elephant Conservation in Zimbabwe

From its humble beginnings as a farm back in the 1950's, this project has since grown into the impressive conservation project you see before you today. This amazing volunteering project sits on an impressive 10,000 acre reserve and as a volunteer you will have an amazing chance to get hands on helping the elephants, rhinos and other animals that call the project home.

You will be helping with a variety of conservation activities and will essentially become the newest member of this every-growing conservation family. The work you do here is invaluable and it goes a long way towards helping the project achieve its conservation based goals. You will be staying in a beautiful volunteer house set right in the heart of the reserve, and this stunning lakeside property is the perfect place to rest after a hard days volunteering.

Some of the activities you will be helping with include:

  • Feeding and walking with the rhinos and elephants
  • Breakfast with the elephants
  • Observing the rhino and elephant behaviours
  • White rhino tracking
  • Herd monitoring on horseback
  • Game drives
  • Weapons training (with a paintball gun)
  • Volunteering at a local school
  • General conservation activities

Itinerary: Please note itineraries are subject to change so what follows is just a rough guideline.

Day 1 - The Adventure Begins:

You will arrive at the project site from the airport and given time to settle into the volunteer accommodation, in addition to taking a tour of the facilities.

Day 2 - 14 - Project Days:
Project days begin around 6am with volunteers enjoying a hearty breakfast of toast, cereal or maybe even an omelette alongside a big cup of coffee for some early morning energy for your busy day ahead! You will then head out to complete the first activity of the day before returning for breakfast at 9am. At 10am you'll head back out to complete the morning's activities before enjoying a leisurely lunch around 12pm. After lunch its time to head back out into the field to complete the afternoons activity. A weekly schedule is posted on the wall of the volunteer house so you'll know what activities you'll be doing on a daily basis.

Day 15 - Return Home :
Sadly, today is your last day on the project! After saying your fond farewells to project facilitators and your fellow volunteers, you will make your way back to the airport to begin your journey home or commence your onward and independent travel plans. Wherever you may be going, you can be sure to be leaving the project with a lifetime of unforgettable memories!
