A Gap Year in Sri Lanka

Why go backpacking in Sri Lanka?

Backpacking in Sri Lanka has grown in popularity in recent years, and it’s now becoming an established destination for travellers who want to experience an exciting local culture, as well as relax on some frankly ridiculously paradisaical beaches. As a stop on a trip around South Asia, it’s well worth it.

Sri Lanka is a tropical island nation in the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of India. Formerly known as Ceylon – under the rule of Portugal, the Netherlands and the British Empire – it gained its independence from Britain in 1948, and was renamed Sri Lanka in 1972.

Why go?

Sri Lanka experienced a long civil war throughout the latter years of the 20th century, but the government wiped out its opposition the Tamil Tigers in 2009, ending 30 years of bloodshed. The island is now embarking on brighter chapter of its history and is becoming increasingly popular with gap year travellers and backpackers.

The country features some amazing ancient temples and its rich biodiversity makes it very popular with nature lovers, gap year volunteers and wildlife photographers alike.
