The Amazon is the biggest, baddest jungle there is. Fo’ real. We make its acquaintance in Puerto Maldonado, head up Tambopata River by boat, stalk into its rainforest under the cover of night (and day) and visit a clay lick. Macaws looove licking clay.

No amount of David Attenborough documentaries can prepare you for the mind-boggling awesomeness of the Amazon Jungle. So switch off your TV, put down your iPad, and channel the spirit of Alexander von Humboldt, one of Darwin’s influences. Google him.

Tour Itinerary

1 - Puerto Maldonado - Amazon Jungle Lodge

Welcome to Peru. On arrival to Puerto Maldonado Airport (PEM), you'll be transferred to the heart of the Peruvian Amazon.  A lodge representative will welcome you at the airport. You will then head to the Amazon lodge's office in town (a maximum of 15 minutes by van) to pack the necessary gear for the next few days. Here you can leave most of your luggage in safe storage and continue travelling with a small pack with just the necessary items for your next two nights in the jungle. Then you'll take a motorised canoe upriver approximately 2 hours to your jungle lodge in the Madre de Dios area. Once you arrive, there will be time to unpack and unwind. Rooms at the lodge are basic but clean and comfortable and there are flushing toilets, showers, mosquito nets and kerosene lamps. However, there is no electricity in the rooms. Electricity will only be available in the common areas, and likely at a designated time, not all day. Lodge staff are primarily local, including the multilingual guides who can teach you all about the area's rich flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for toucans, otters, spider monkeys and hopefully avoid anacondas. Once in your lodge, attend a short briefing where we'll be collecting your insurance details and passport information. Tonight, head out into the jungle on a night walk. Office details for passengers that are in Puerto Maldonado prior to the tour start date. Cayman Lodge Madre de Dios Ave. Fonavi H-10, Puerto Maldonado. +51 (954-135-395) Notes: Please ensure you are booked on the earliest flight arriving into Puerto Maldonado or alternatively before 1 pm.

2 - Amazon Jungle Lodge

Get up before the sun rises to depart by boat at 4 am and head to Chuncho clay lick. You have to venture out this early so that you arrive before the arras and parrots come down. Seats are provided so that you can peacefully observe the arras and parrots eating clay from the clay lick. After observing the birds, eat breakfast and then leave for Cascada el Gato, where you’ll go on an excursion to observe monkeys and different types of plants. Head back to the lodge in the afternoon, where you'll have free time to do as you wish.

3 - Amazon Jungle Lodge

After an early breakfast, start with a two and a half hour jungle hike to Sachavacayoc lake. On your way there, you’ll get to see medicinal plants and different species of monkeys. Exploring this lake by canoe allows you to see a lot of birds, parrots, macaws, giant otters and other mammals. In the early afternoon, stop for a packed lunch in the jungle. Afterwards, you may have the opportunity to go fishing before returning to the lodge for some relaxation in the hammocks facing the river.Tonight, enjoy dinner with the rest of the group. Later, we'll head out in the dark for a night jungle walk!
