Catering to adventurous backpackers, Stray aims to get you further off the beaten track in New Zealand, to show you the hidden gems only the locals know about and introduce you to the real New Zealand.
You can choose to travel on a fixed-date small group adventure tour, or a flexible travel pass which allows you to hop-on and hop-off anywhere on the route and travel for up to 12months!
Either way, you’ll be guided by a great local guide, be introduced to NZ culture and see all the must-see destinations.
Where do Stray go?
Stray travel from the top of the country, to the bottom, with some outstanding, unique experiences and destinations along the way. To name a few… a high country sheep station, a lodge situated in native bush, one of New Zealand’s most beautiful beaches, a Maori culture experience with a local family, overnight next to NZ’s highest mountain and so much more.
Why Travel With Stray?
Go further off the beaten track
Our mission is to take you further off the beaten track in New Zealand, immersing you in the places and activities that will, quite simply, blow you away.
We are a New Zealand owned and operated company and our local crew have chosen some unique places to include on our travel route including access to 7 of New Zealand’s National Parks, highlights like Abel Tasman, Queenstown and Rotorua and some special places, exclusive to Stray.
See and Do more
We are Stray and Stray is what we do!
Some bus companies will take you straight from A to B with barely a toilet break in between but, with us, you will experience great stops and inclusions en route to your next destination.
A typical travel day can see you stopping off for a short walk to a waterfall, climbing to a lookout for a photo opportunity, pausing at an unusual piece of New Zealand art along the roadside, or stopping to check out a wild fur seal colony. You’ll fit so much more into your NZ road trip!
Tailor your trip
A hop-on hop-off travel pass on our adventure travel network allows you the flexibility to tailor your trip to suit you. You choose what part of the route you want to travel and how long you want to travel for.
Stray’s hop-on hop-off passes are valid for 12 months from the first date of travel so you can stop to work, play or volunteer along the way. Even better – you can re-travel the route again and again for up to a year!
You also choose where you stay, what activities you do and buy food that suits your budget, as you go along.
Our Driver Guides will take you on the adventure, point out their favourite places, and recommend accommodation and activities but what you choose to do is entirely up to you!
No stress mate!
Stray is the ‘no stress’ way to get around. You don’t need to drive, navigate, work out where to go or where to stop. You just relax in air-conditioned comfort as your Driver Guide takes you on an awesome road trip.
Your Driver Guide has extensive knowledge of the best things to see and do in New Zealand, so if you’ve got questions, need advice or support, they’re there to help – almost like a walking guidebook! You can ask them anything, from information about New Zealand history and culture to the best spot to get a cold New Zealand beer.
With Stray you’ll get great deals on activities so you can afford to do more. Your Driver Guide can book these in for you, they’ll also suggest free or low cost things for you to do too.
And you’ll never be stuck without a bed for the night, because while you’re travelling with us we guarantee accommodation each night of your trip in a dorm at the Stray recommended accommodation. Your driver will ask you the night before if you want a bed or not – and it’s entirely up to you.
We have extremely high customer satisfaction and referrals because we offer travellers more of what they want – down-to-earth, real New Zealand with an awesome crew and a greater emphasis on your needs.
