Over the course of 28 days, you'll explore three major mountain ranges – the Sierra Nevadas, Cascades and Rocky Mountains – and cover deserts, cities, forests and canyons. This tour showcases the best national parks, attractions and wildlife viewing opportunities in Western USA. Cross nine very different states, with a multitude of exciting and exhilarating experiences. If you really want the ‘ultimate Western USA experience’, this is it!

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

With the Californian sun on your face you're off to Hollywood Boulevard, where you'll catch a view of the famous sign and stroll along the Walk of Fame. But it’s time to leave the glitz and glam of LA behind you and head to the coast! First up is Santa Barbara, a gem of a coastal city with a decidedly Spanish flair and miles of pristine sandy beaches, a great introduction to the incredible California Coast.

Day 2

Continue heading north where you make your way for the Big Sur and Monterey area. Spend your night under the Californian stars; the perfect way to get to know your fellow travellers!

Day 3-4

Say ‘so long’ to the ocean for a couple of days and head towards the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevadas and the towering granite peaks of Yosemite National Park. You'll have two days to hike, bike, or float through this extraordinary landscape of glacier-carved granite monoliths, spectacular waterfalls and groves of Giant Sequoias. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for bears and coyotes roaming the trails.

Day 5-6

Come fog or shine, this city is always a highlight! Start with a walk across Golden Gate Bridge and a visit to Haight-Ashbury, a neighbourhood oozing with hippy vibes and plenty of quirky shops and cafes. Head down to Pier 39 to see the resident sea lions in their hundreds - you'll definitely hear them before you see them! For seafood, make your way to nearby Fisherman's Wharf. Learn all about the prisoners who spent their lives trying to escape the city's most famous attraction, Alcatraz Prison, with a superb audio tour included in your trip (value US$33). For a different perspective of the famous Golden Gate Bridge, set sail on an optional sunset sail cruise in the evening. Bliss!

Day 7-8

As you drive along the stunning Californian Coast to Redwood National Park, you'll be well and truly spoilt with amazing scenery around every bend. Get out and stretch those legs with a hike on the Tall Trees Grove trail and keep an eye out for elk and bear who can be spotted hiding under the canopy of the Redwoods. Redwoods are the tallest trees on earth, so be prepared to spend a lot of time looking up! As you explore more of the park you might start to recognise the canyons covered in fern and moss from Steven Spielberg's 'Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World'...but don't worry, the dinosaurs are long gone!

Day 9-10

Call it what you want - 'City of Roses', 'Bridge City' or 'Beervana'- Portland is simply awesome! The fact that you'll see the slogan 'Keep Portland Weird' plastered everywhere makes this super chilled city even more intriguing. It’s a vibrant city, full of quirky cafes, cool hipster folk and farmers markets. Oh - and let's not forget about the beer! With over 30 breweries dotted across the city you'll never go thirsty in Portland.

Day 11

Journey into the heart of the Cascade Mountains to Mount Rainier National Park. There are over 300 miles available on the park's network of trails, with everything from easy walks through forest and meadows carpeted in wildflowers, to heart-pounding climbs up to the mountain's glaciers. Mount Rainier, an active strato-volcano, looms in the background. Don’t worry though, it hasn't erupted since 1854! This is the perfect introduction to the lush and vibrant landscape of Washington State.

Day 12-13

Get ready to roll with a blast of fresh air adventure in pristine wilderness. Washington's jewel, Olympic National Park, offers a wide range of vistas including glacier carved valleys, snowy peaks, rugged coastline and an ancient rainforest to explore and enjoy. An afternoon of kayaking is included on Lake Crescent, amongst forest-covered mountains and water so clear it’s tough not to dive in! Relax at Sol Duc Hot Springs (optional), after so much activity, your body will thank you for it.

Day 14

Leaving the mountains of the Olympic Peninsula behind, enjoy a scenic journey across Puget Sound by ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle. Once you’ve arrived, why not whisk yourself more than 150 metres (520 ft.) up the Space Needle, taking in the spectacular setting from a glass elevator? If you prefer to explore at ground level then get yourself to Pike Place Market and watch as the famous fishmongers throw fish to each other, while you grab yourself some tasty local seafood or check out the city's coffee culture. Tonight, rock out in the city that gave the world Hendrix and Nirvana.

Day 15

Depart the city of Seattle early and cross Washington and Idaho's Bitterroot Range into 'Big Sky Country'. Montana welcomes you with rugged mountain peaks and wide open spaces.

Day 16-17

After enjoying a night under a brilliant blanket of stars, you reach Yellowstone National Park for a glorious two night stay. View the iconic and explosive Old Faithful Geyser which goes off like clockwork and check out the colourful waterfalls, while exploring the world's oldest and most famous national park. Keep your camera handy for wildlife that roams the park such as bison, bear, moose and elk.

Day 18-19

Next up are the wonderful views and hikes that await in majestic Grand Teton National Park. With few foothills to speak of, the jagged peaks here rise like teeth from lush, flat meadows against the bright blue sky. Next you visit the truly Western town of Jackson, Wyoming. Explore pine forests, peaks and lakes or enjoy some rodeo action! Go wild with optional rafting on the Snake River rapids; this is one of America's last great untamed rivers, so it should definitely get that adrenaline pumping! If you prefer to stay on dry land, how about a shot of 'Red-Eye' Whiskey at the Silver Dollar Saloon?

Day 20

Say goodbye to the mountains and hello to the unique red rock scenery that marks the start of the Desert Southwest as you head for the border with Utah. You'll soon see why the intrepid explorer John Wesley Powell gave this place the name Flaming Gorge, as you watch the sun reflecting off this unique red rock landscape. Make sure to get that grammable shot of the sunset over Flaming Gorge and Green River. The views are out of this world!

Day 21-22

Known for being the USA's natural adventure playground, Moab is next up on your itinerary - and boy, will you be impressed! Named Arches National Park for a reason, the countless number of incredible red rock formations dotted all over the park, shaped by the elements, make for some serious exploration. Delicate Arch is one of Utah's most famous icons and people travel far and wide to see the awesome freestanding 20 metre arch (65 ft.) in all its glory. After your hike why not strap on a helmet and take on this amber terrain on two wheels with a mountain bike? You’re guaranteed perfect conditions with the dips, climbs, twists and turns. Alternatively, you may be tempted by the thrill of a Hummer tour through the red rock scenery! If this isn't enough, you'll pay a visit to Dead Horse Point for amazing canyon views of the snaking Colorado River below.

Day 23

En route to Monument Valley you stop at the viewpoint of Moki Dugway for an awesome view of the road snaking down the mountainside and across the red rock desert. Next it’s off to one of North America's most iconic landscapes, used as the set for countless Western movies. Immerse yourself in the native culture on an included guided jeep tour of the Navajo Reservation and backroads. Marvel at the sight of towering buttes and mesas which dominate the awe-inspiring landscape during the day, then when the sun goes down swap campfire stories under a blanket of stars.

Day 24-25

Strike out across the desert in search of one of the 'Seven Natural Wonders of the World', the Grand Canyon. An early morning start has its rewards as this jaw-dropping landscape comes alive with colour at sunrise. Take to the sky to witness the Grand Canyon's monumental red and gold formations from up high on an optional helicopter flight. Hit the rim trails for vast incredible views of the canyon. You may prefer to hike down into the belly of the canyon - Plateau Point offers views of the rushing Colorado River. Or, there’s the aptly named 'Ooh Aah Point' on the South Kaibab Trail. Whatever view of the Grand Canyon you go for, you'll never forget the moment you first lay your eyes on this incredible place!

Day 26-27

Today you travel a section of the original Route 66 and make a stop at the little town of Seligman, packed with quirky shops full of iconic road trip memorabilia. Next it’s off to the main event, Las Vegas! With a sudden burst of neon, this desert oasis appears before your eyes. A-list stars swarm to this 24/7 party town - you may not make it into any of their swanky parties, but you can feel like a total legend if you take a cruise down The Strip on an optional party bus. The possibilities are endless in Vegas…tour the glamorous hotels, take in a show, ride a roller coaster or go clubbing all night. You can even have a 'sham' wedding if fancy, and marry whoever (or whatever) you like! For those with a little cash to splash, why not take an evening flight down the Las Vegas Strip? Epic!

Day 28

Finish your tour in style with a stroll around Hollywood Boulevard and spot your fave stars along the Walk of Fame. If you decide to stay on a few more days, head down to Venice Beach for the perfect place to relax in the Californian sun. Or to truly get under the skin of America's biggest city, add an Urban Adventure on to the end of your tour and explore the city with a local. This tour ends at approximately 17:00 hrs. We can book you post tour accommodation at our gateway hotel if required. If you are planning to fly tonight, please do not book a flight that departs before 21:00 hrs.
