Volunteer on an African animal project whilst on your gap year and have the opportunity to play a meaningful role in the future of these wonderful animals. Africa is well known as the home of the Big Five: lions, elephants, cape buffalos, leopards and rhinoceroses. There is also myriad other mammals such as hippopotami, wildebeests, zebras, antelopes, gazelles, giraffes, baboons, mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, lemurs, hyenas and African wild dogs. Africa is also home to many unique amphibians, reptiles, birds and fish.
All these animals and more have found homes in various national parks all over Africa such as big cats in the Maasai Mara Reserve in Kenya, great buffalo in the Kidepo National Park in Uganda, and giant crocodiles in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. These animals sometimes wonder into close proximity to humans, giving volunteers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have an up close and personal encounter with a wild animal.
Volunteer with African animals and you could take part in a wide variety of different projects available in many diverse and vast countries. If African animal projects appeal to you then check out our product listings and add a project to your gap year itinerary.
