Enjoy this stunning conservation area on the Bushman’s River where you will volunteer with game rangers on a private game reserve. Africa’s Big 5 are elephants, lions, rhino, leopards and Cape buffalo, and they are all are known to inhabit this region. Alongside these magnificent creatures you may also be lucky enough to witness giraffes, hippos, zebra, monkeys and baboons, and over 250 special of bird. There is a huge conservation effort here with over 20,000 native trees planted each year to help the natural habitats.
Your main focus is to assist with improving the conditions of the native wildlife. Every day is different but tasks may include lion tracking and monitoring, game drives and predator care and interaction. You will also be tree planting, landscaping, and removing alien vegetation. There will be the chance to help out at the rehabilitation centre, possible game captures and fence patrol and maintenance tasks. As well as conservation, the park is also heavily involved with the local community so you may be given the chance to help with school community projects if you volunteer during term time.
The programme runs from Monday to Friday and at weekends you are able to explore and relax accordingly. Visit the beautiful town of Port Elizabeth where you can enjoy the sun, sea surf and sand. Or just relax making use of the fabulous on site facilities that the reserve has to offer including a swimming pool, tennis courts, cricket pitches and BBQ facilities.
The accommodation is fairly luxurious compared to some of our other conservation projects! New, clean dormitories are male and female and there is plenty of storage space. Located in the heart of the reserve, you have access to all the facilities mentioned above. There are three excellent meals provided each day by local cooks who offer a range of African and Asian themed delicious food. When staying in Port Elizabeth, accommodation is provided at no extra charge, however food will be at an additional cost.
