The project promotes a positive attitude to education through lessons, encouragement and support to provide a strong foundation for the children as they enter the state school system. Volunteers work alongside local staff as an assistant, helping with games, music and fun activities. By providing safe, free child care, the parents can gain an income to support their families.

Volunteer role: What will I be doing?
The Children’s Day Care centre is located a quiet suburb of Arequipa and is a colourful place with five classrooms and a large outdoor play area. The project provides a dependable child care option for low income families in the area.
In the morning younger children aged 2 – 5 arrive at the centre and attend their age specific class and each class has around 20 children. Each day will differ and the primary role of volunteers is to alleviate the pressure on the full-time local teachers.
Typical morning tasks which you can get involved in could include:
- Playing games and early learning activities
- Songs and dancing
- Outside games and activities
- Creative activities; painting, drawing, arts and crafts
- Monitoring playtime (intervening with disagreements – usually over who has the ball!)
- Reinforcing hygiene rules, for example hand washing before food
- Helping at meal times
- Cleaning and tidying
In the afternoon, older children aged 6 -13 arrive and the project provides them with a safe after school venue for further study and entertainment. Volunteers who have a good level of Spanish also have the option to help with the afternoon session.
Activities in the afternoon may be similar to morning and also include:
- Helping with homework
- Library time
- Lessons or educational activities; maths, English, Spanish, communication skills
