Volunteer building projects are integral to some parts of the world so that everybody in the community has a roof over their heads and a place to call home. Many families in areas like Colombia, Cambodia, Ghana and Swaziland live in sub-standard housing with no running water or suitable sanitation. Children are denied an education because of the lack of schools and nurseries. Teenagers turn to a life of crime because of the lack of community centres available. Abandoned children are forced to rough the outside conditions and risk being trafficked because of the lack of constructed orphanages. This is real life to a group of people whose lives you can drastically change with your time and help.
Most projects require volunteers to work 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, with weekends and evenings free to discover the area. Day to day tasks include, but are not limited to, digging trenches, laying foundations, erecting walls and roofs, building septic tanks, building rainwater harvest tanks, laying fabrics and more.
If you have an interest in construction, enquire about a volunteer building project on your gap year. No matter what your level of experience is you can help make a vital difference.
