Cultural Development

Culture and Development Overseas

Cultural development projects focus on national identity and creating opportunities for the local community to remember their history and embrace their future. Participants usually work very closely with councils and community groups to generate opportunities for the local people to be active within their tribe or group.

Volunteers in cultural development programs abroad are usually based in schools, work environments, youth groups or community centres, and are provided a homestay with an indigenous family to provide a deeper understanding of the mind-sets, behaviours, practises and beliefs practised by the native people.  Daily interaction with the local community is imperative so that there is a clear and constant communication steam. Emphasis is usually placed on examining questions about ethnic identities, gender roles, class and religion to facilitate redefining their future.

Volunteers are people who immerse themselves in new cultures and environments and are hardworking and adaptable to new environments. Patience, flexibility and cultural sensitivity are also required and the willingness to work varying hours throughout the week is essential. If you have an interest in culture and development overseas, why not look through our product listings and add a volunteering program to your gap year itinerary?
