An inspiring project
The world’s coral reefs are in peril due to the effects of pollution, tourism and overfishing. See this damage for yourself and help do something about it. You’ll be based with a small marine research organisation who operate from the idyllic island of Koh Pha Ngan. The team are monitoring the decline of the local coral reefs and researching vital conservation methods. Join them!
You will perform daily dives to examine the local ecosystem and measure the state of coral beds, taking notes, samples and photographs. You can also help to grow small bits of coral in aquariums which can then be transplanted to the sea. This project is perfect for those who are looking to study marine biology or similar fields. The team are passionate about coral and are always eager to share their knowledge, making this a perfect opportunity for anyone interested in marine conservation. You don’t have to have any experience, though. Sheer enthusiasm is enough.
Learn to dive
Diving is a big part of this project, so be prepared to spend plenty of time in Thailand’s glorious waters. Experienced divers will love this, but complete novices are also welcome. There are professional diving instructors available to help you progress and you have the opportunity to qualify following a 4 day PADI course.
You will be based in a quiet fishing village on the west side of the island, giving you a relaxing base from which to explore. You live in the same location as the research team in a relaxed and fun environment. You will be room sharing with at least one other volunteer. Meals are not included, but local restaurants are cheap and delicious, there is also a fully equipped kitchen for those wanting to eat in.
Our UK staff will get you fully prepared beforehand and will be able to advise and help throughout. Once in Thailand you’ll be well looked after by the research team too.
