Unique enough, this country was a Spanish colony for a considerably long period of time, and the effects of the colonial masters can still be traced in the lives of the locals. The capital of Ecuador, Quito, was the first city to be marked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The scenic setting of beautiful Ecuador makes for a perfect volunteerism trip. You can make the most of your gap year by engaging in some meaningful work, that’ll not just help you to make a difference to the society, but also help you to evolve as a better person. During the weekend you can also try your hands at exploring the areas around the plateau and the volcanic peaks. Volunteering Solutions has some interesting programs, which are as follows:
Amazon Animal Rescue Center Program – As a part of this program, you will be working in partnership with the Ecuadorian Environmental Police (UPMA) and the Ministry of Environment in the fight against the trafficking, abuse, capture, and hunting of wild animals. This center is very organised and volunteers can help with caring for the animals and maintenance. The best part of this program is that you’ll get to spend some quality time amidst nature, soaking in the freshness and learn to help the animals have a better life.
Childcare Program – Being a part of this program, you will work at a children’s hospital, and help the kids get better soon. Along with medical treatment, these kids need extra love and care. Some of the children, who are admitted for a longer time, also attend the play area called “Ludoteca” where volunteers engage in extracurricular activities with the children. You’ll mostly be doing non-medical work at the hospital, so you need not be a medical student.
Street Children Program – This is one of the most popular programs in Ecuador, where you’ll get to work with the children who belong to the lower sections of the society and are usually left without any care from their families. Most of the kids usually have a traumatic past, marred with experiences like living with drug addict parents, living on the streets, abused by others, subjected to violence and a lot of mental torture. Being a volunteer for this program, you can help in shaping their future and also understand how blessed we are, in this world which isn’t fair for all.
Sports Coaching Program – If you love to play football and feel like training the little kids to be experts in the game, then this is your chance. You’ll be coaching the kids (between the age of 6 to 16 years old) at the soccer school, in the evenings on weekdays. You can also make good use of the daytime, by teaching English & Maths at a school in Quito.
