For decades, Indonesia has been ranked as the number one shark fishing nation in the world. Make a real difference in conservation trough research and join our research team in Gili Air. The Gili Shark Conservation Project is a small conservation and data collection program. It is the first of its kind in the Gili Islands, and takes an active role in conservation issues in Indonesia’s three Gili Islands; Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air.

We are always looking for enthusiastic people who want to live  in paradise and make a difference during their holiday. Help the sharks and the community of Gili Air by giving your time and love. You don’t need to be a shark expert or a diver to join our project, however a passion and commitment to shark conservation is important. We appreciate all the unique skills that you can bring to our project and welcome people of every corner of the globe.

During your stay with the Gili Shark Conservation Project you will learn how to dive / improve your dive skills, become a scientific diver and a shark conservation diver. We teach you how to conduct survey dives and how to drop a BRUV (Baited Remote Underwater Video). Our scientist will help you to study, analyze and input the data collected and watch the BRUV video footage.

During your first  week at the project you will receive a comprehensive dive and methodology training with PADI dive and Project AWARE specialty courses. You will work with experienced dive instructors and field scientists from around the world to further your diving and marine biology knowledge. We are proud to say we closely collaborate with PADI 5 star IDC Dive Resort Oceans 5. No matter what course you would like to do, the instructors of Oceans5 will make sure it will be a fun and unforgettable memory. Together we offer you a full range of PADI dive courses, from your Open Water course to your Divemaster certification.

Time to go night diving

We host participants from all over the globe that help our research team to promote shark conservation and conduct citizen scientific research. Our mission is to create a research and education station in Indonesia where people from around the world can make a difference during their holiday.

We conduct marine research for effective marine management worldwide and we do this by partnering up with multiple local and international organizations and researchers. The more we share, the more we have. That’s why our data sets are available for free to anyone in the world.

With the abundance data we collect we want to prove that the reefs surrounding the Gili Islands in Indonesia are a shark nursery area. In 2019 the government will review the Gili Matra Marine Park and we would love to see that they will create the first official shark nursery around the Gili Islands.

We are a small organisation with 4 staff and we can host maximum 12 participants. You will be entering the project as one of the team members and your ideas and hard work are valued in its growth and success.
