Lead sports sessions for local children to highlight the importance having fun and getting fit at the same time!
Volunteers work in the local schools to promote wellbeing through teaching the importance of health and fitness. You will work with the children and inspire a passion to learn and encourage increased participation in sports. Sport is undervalued in the schools and many of the children would not have access to health and sports lessons without the additional support from volunteers.
Immerse yourself in Nepali life and explore the beautiful Himalayas. Enjoy adventure activities including paragliding, white-water rafting, kayaking and trekking.
What will I be doing?
Volunteers share their passion and skills for sports at the community projects we work with throughout the year. Volunteers will also be able to coach a range of sports at the primary and secondary schools in the area, usually spending half a week at each school. During the dry session (October-March) volunteers can teach a range of sports at the local middle school and after school at the child care centres. During the wet season (April-September) volunteers can give fitness lessons in the classrooms and plan inside games as it may be too hot and wet to coach outside.
Sport is not part of the standard curriculum in Nepal and so Sports Coaching volunteers are valuable to the placements. Running sports sessions and delivering training to the students teaches the importance of health and fitness. Sports coaching helps to encourage teamwork and team spirit, improve concentration and increase the confidence of the children. Volunteers are also able to share their ideas and skills with the current teachers who can pass on their knowledge to pupils and other teachers.
Sports that have proved popular in the past are football, cricket, basketball and rounders but you are welcome to introduce new activities.
