Take part in a very hands on conservation experience protecting Sri Lanka’s endangered elephants. Sri Lanka is one of the most bio diverse countries in the world, and this project strives to maintain this important balance.
You will be tracking where the elephants go and what they do, helping with their monitoring and identifying them. This is key to be able to protect these gentle giants, and enable them to thrive as some of Asia’s only remaining wild elephants.
Elephant populations in Sri Lanka are tragically dwindling due to to the increase in the human population here. Your role will be to help understand the movements of elephants and help locals to live closely alongside them, protecting their crops and predicting where elephants will be grazing. Learn how to use GPS to track the ellies and assist with monitoring elephants from tree houses or overnight, a sight you will remember for the rest of your life!
This project also involves working with the local community and even helping out in the local school. The children here are the elephant guardians of the future, and it is important that they are as passionate as you are about protecting them.
This project is set on the stunning island of Sri Lanka, a “must” for any bucket list. You will be living and working in the mountainous and beautiful heart of the country, surrounded by jungle, wetlands, forests and grasslands. You will be living in a beautiful mountainous house, with views over a reservoir – where you can often see elephants bathing!
