Volunteering with monks
This program offers volunteers a unique opportunity to experience life in a Lao Buddhist monastery. Many novice monks grow up in monasteries that provide them with shelter, food and education. However, educational resources are often scarce and this is why volunteers can make a real difference. Once novice monks reach adulthood, they choose whether to remain as a monk or to look for work. Learning English can really help to widen their options and boost their confidence when searching for a job. Volunteers will travel between two monasteries so they will gain a real understanding of how different monasteries work.
Volunteers will have access to an incredible resources room – where they can plan lessons and share ideas. All volunteers teach for 3-4 hours a day, giving them plenty of time to reflect on lessons and to plan new ones. Teacher training sessions are provided, helping volunteers to get the most out of their time in the classroom. All volunteers will also get the opportunity to help in a local English center for a few hours a week – a real highlight or volunteers.
Living in a shared guest house, volunteers will feel part of the local community. Surrounded by lots of shops and restaurants there is plenty to do after a day teaching. Three authentic, home-cooked meals are provided a day and there are communal areas where volunteers can relax in the evening. Luang Prabang is a incredible city. With nearby waterfalls and fascinating temples – volunteers are never short of things to see and do at the weekend!
